ABSTRACT: Environmental Education is understood as the processes through which the individual and the community build social values, knowledge, skills, attitudes and competences aimed at the conservation of the environment. Based on the concern about the population's level of awareness about the large amount of waste generated, which cause various environmental problems, the aim of this study was to evaluate the environmental perception about the selective collection of 8th grade students from a public elementary school located in the city of Arapiraca-AL. The research is characterized as qualitative and quantitative, exploratory and descriptive. To assess the environmental perception, questionnaires were applied to 65 students from the 8th grade of elementary school. Then, the data were tabulated using Microsoft Excel for Windows® tools. It was noticeable that the students, aged between 12 and 17 years old, already had a discernment of the importance of AE and of selective collection, however, the sensitivity regarding effective actions related to this theme has not yet been observed. In short, greater school intervention is needed to raise students' awareness and awareness, contextualizing and problematizing environmental issues, in the classroom and developing projects alluding to the theme. For this, the distance between the theoretical discourse and effective actions must be narrowed, be they directed to the problem of garbage or to any others that permeate the applicability of Environmental Education.
