ABSTRACT: Stimulating the habit of reading is the responsibility of all education professionals, with School Libraries / Reading Rooms being essential for the accomplishment of such action. These environments have a role that goes beyond lending and demanding books, as they must stimulate, coordinate and organize, through their professionals, educational, recreational and socializing actions, being them also aimed at research. Given the importance of these environments for the teaching-learning process, the present work traces a panorama, based on the current legal parameters, of School Libraries / Reading Rooms of 5 state schools of the 1st Teaching Management (Gere). The research, of qualitative character, used the questionnaire as an instrument of data collection. The investigation showed, among other results, that in the schools surveyed there are only Reading Rooms, that there is a shortage of professionals qualified to work in these spaces and that the collection is not well organized, updated or varied, with a predominance of textbooks on their shelves.
