ABSTRACT: Sewage treatment plants are responsible for the production of biogas, which, when emitted uncontrollably, can cause serious environmental problems, as its composition is formed mainly by methane gas and carbon dioxide. One of the most promising ways of using this biogas is the production of electrical, thermal or mechanical energy. This research has as proposal to carry out a survey of the energetic potential of the sanitary effluents generated in the University Center - CESMAC. Calculations were performed to estimate methane gas, accounting for its losses during the anaerobic treatment process and the power generated for generating electricity. It was found that the real methane production potential was 139.54 m³ / day and a power of 315.98 kWh / day, which is equivalent to 9,611.06 kWh / month or 115,332.70 kWh / year. These values would be sufficient to supply power to operate up to 91 computers per day, since each computer requires 130 watts per hour. In addition to the possibility of attending students and employees, credits can be earned by reversing the electricity generated in the distribution network through the electricity compensation system. Energy alternatives through renewable energy sources, with the aim of reducing dependence on fossil fuels, in addition to finding environmentally sustainable solutions to expand the countries' energy matrix and reduce global impacts.
