Geography plays an important role in the social life of individuals and the knowledges related to the place, a key concept of Geography, makes it possible for elementary school students to begin their readings of the world. The study of the place will lead the student to understand his space and to analyze how it behaves and relates to the global. Given the importance of this concept, we sought to analyze the understanding that students of the 5th and 6th years of elementary school have about the notion of place in Geography classes. For the development of the research, visits were made the school, study field, in which the observation of the classes proceeded and interviews and the application of forms were carried out with the students. 40 (forty) students from the 5th and 6th years participated in the research. It was found that the students showed great difficulty in relating the concept of place to explain the space where they live. It was noticed that most students are unable to form a geographical reasoning that makes it possible to relate the contents seen in the classroom with the facts that occur in their place of experience. Geography is seen in a fragmented way, being associated with the content experienced in the classroom, but without the understanding of its object of study, the geographical space. However, the concept of place is essential to start reading the world, as it is from the lived space that students establish their daily experiences and relate to the other places that integrate the world in its entirety. Given the above, the importance of studying the place is reiterated, given that the teaching of the concept of place makes it possible to apprehend the most diverse scales between the individual and the world.
