This article aims to tell the history of higher education in the state of Alagoas from the perspective of regional development. In this sense, the chronology of events is linked to the history of each institution. In order to facilitate the positioning of the history of the institutions and, therefore, of the history of higher education in Alagoas, a timeline was prepared to summarize the findings. The methodology is based on an interpretative qualitative approach, based on a semi-structured interview script, interpreted based on content analysis by category of analysis. The results show that higher education in Alagoas, since its genesis in the 1930s, has been linked to the state's elite, which has done very little to democratize its access. This history can be broken down into three specific moments, namely: a first moment of the search for knowledge, a second of struggle for the democratization of access, specifically for the interior of the state, and a third of the consolidation of higher education.
