Brazil is a country that has great biodiversity as one of its main characteristics. In its flora the species Jatropha gossypiifolia L. is found popularly known as “pinhão-roxo”, “pião-roxo”, “pião-preto”, “jalapão”, “erva purgante” and “mamoninha”. This plant is widely used in popular medicine in Brazil and other countries because it has several therapeutic effects due to the chemical composition of the plant where it is possible to find organic acids, alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, tannins, phenols, saponins, among other constituents. This study aimed to analyze the therapeutic uses, pharmacological activity and toxicology of Jatropha gossypiifolia L. based on the literature. The methodology consisted of selecting articles from the Pubmed, Google Scholar, Scielo and BVS databases and carrying out an analysis using the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Through this study it was observed that “black physicnut” has therapeutic effects such as: antimicrobial, healing, diuretic, analgesic, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, among others mentioned in the study including some contradictory ones, such as antidiarrheal and purgative. Despite the mentioned effects the toxicology of the plant is an important factor highlighting mainly the latex present in the stem that presents toxic activity in addition to some studies also indicating cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. J. gossypiifolia is a plant that has numerous pharmacological properties that can be beneficial or harmful to health requiring a deeper analysis of its effects.
