Seeing Invisible Abuse: Support for Women Victims of Violence from the Perspective of Legal Psychology

Depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, PTSD, suicidal ideation, and mental disorders can be directly related to abusive relationships against women, with psychological violence being the gateway to other forms of violence. Therefore, this article aims to present data on the services provided to women victims of domestic violence by the Psychology Department of the Alagoas State Public Defender's Office in Arapiraca, in conjunction with the Legal Psychology Center of the Federal University of Alagoas. It also details the types of violence, highlights the role of Legal Psychology in the family context, illustrates the tools used to support victims, and elucidates the harm to their mental health. In Brazil, the Maria da Penha Law defines five types of domestic and family violence against women: physical, psychological, moral, sexual, and patrimonial. This work was developed using a qualitative and quantitative literature review and data collection by the Public Defender's Office's Psychology Center. From the analyses, it is therefore concluded that it is clear that violence against women has a high correlation with the development of mental disorders and that treating the psychological issue of women who are victims of violence is fundamental to breaking the cycle of abuse.
