Resumen

Este estudio cualitativo utilizó el Análisis Fenomenológico Interpretativo para analizar las experiencias de depresión posparto en madres solteras. El estudio destacó los problemas que enfrentan las participantes como estudiantes y madres solteras. Participaron estudiantes de un campus satélite. La investigadora utilizó muestreo intencional y de bola de nieve para identificar a 15 madres jóvenes solteras con entre uno y tres hijos. No necesariamente habían sido diagnosticadas o tratadas por depresión posparto. Las madres solteras experimentan diferentes síntomas de depresión posparto. Inseguridad, llanto frecuente, irritabilidad, síntomas físicos, autoculpabilización, autolesiones, irracionalidad, resignación, aislamiento e ideación suicida son algunos de los síntomas experimentados durante la depresión posparto. Según sus informes, los síntomas de la depresión posparto pueden ser resultado de los cambios abruptos en sus vidas como madres primerizas. El afrontamiento centrado en las emociones, el afrontamiento centrado en el problema y el afrontamiento religioso fueron los mecanismos de afrontamiento más utilizados por las madres solteras. Futuras investigaciones deberían explorar estos métodos de afrontamiento. Este estudio contribuye a la comprensión teórica de las experiencias de depresión posparto y los mecanismos de afrontamiento entre las madres solteras.
