ABSTRACT: Schistosomiasis mansoni is a parasitic disease considered worldwide as a public health problem, affecting several Brazilian states including Maranhão. The disease mainly affects poor communities with conditions conducive to the onset of the disease, poor access to health system, safe water and adequate sanitation. Therefore, the present study aimed to verify the prevalence of schistosomiasis in residents of rural communities in the municipality of Palmeirândia-MA. This is a cross-sectional and descriptive study with a quantitative approach, based on the analysis of reports from the Program for the Control of Schistosomiasis from 2014 to 2017, provided by the National Health Foundation of the municipality. From these data it was possible to verify that the study site was endemic for the disease, however, the communities located closer to the center of the city presented with low indexes and even negative for it. Thus, in view of the various socioenvironmental factors related to the number of occurrences of the disease, it was concluded that the rural communities of the municipality are prevalent for schistosomiasis and present favorable conditions for its expansion.
