Black Mobilization and Social Control: Building Equity through Popular Health Education

Historically, the black population faces significant challenges arising from racism in several areas of their lives, with health being one of the main ones. Racism is recognized as one of the social determinants of health and from this point of view, the Ministry of Health elaborated, in 2009, the National Policy for the Integral Health of the Black Population (PNSIPN), in order to promote the health of this population. However, the lack of knowledge of users and health professionals is one of the main challenges for the PNSIPN to be put into practice. From this perspective, the present work aims to report, from a multidisciplinary perspective, the experience of popular health education conducted in a quilombola remnant community in the agreste region of Alagoas. This is a descriptive study, with a qualitative approach, of the experience report type. During the activity, it was observed that the concept of racism, as a social determinant of health, was not understood in its entirety. With the dynamics, it was possible to exchange experiences between professionals, users and managers present in the council in relation to the health of the black population. In addition, there was also a contribution to the training process of the students involved, positively influencing the practice of future health professionals.
