The expansion of shrimp farming into inland areas of Northeastern Brazil has led to productive and territorial transformations in regions traditionally occupied by family farming. In the Agreste region of the state of Alagoas, particularly in the upper sub-basin of the Coruripe River, shrimp production in excavated ponds has consolidated itself as an economic alternative for farmers affected by water limitations and the instability of traditional agricultural activities. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze the development of shrimp farming in the Agreste region of Alagoas and to identify its main technical, environmental, and socioeconomic challenges. The research was conducted using a qualitative and quantitative approach, including semi-structured interviews with producers, technicians, and agents of the production chain, as well as the analysis of secondary data obtained from institutions such as the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Brazilian Association of Shrimp Farmers (ABCC), and municipal agencies. The results indicate that the activity has significant potential for employment and income generation, with an average of 1.8 direct jobs and 1.9 indirect jobs per hectare of installed ponds. However, several challenges were identified, including water restrictions typical of semi-arid regions, the need for proper effluent management, sanitary control of cultivated species, and limited technical assistance for small producers. It is concluded that shrimp farming in the Agreste region of Alagoas represents an important strategy for productive diversification and rural development; however, its consolidation depends on strengthening public policies, expanding technical assistance, and adopting sustainable environmental management practices.
