Learning about Influenza through Educational Models: experience report

Influenza is an acute viral infection that affects the respiratory system and has a high potential for global dissemination. Among the known viruses (A, B, C, and D), types A and B are the most relevant to human health due to their mutational capacity, which leads to seasonal flu outbreaks. This study aimed to report the experience gained during the development of pedagogical models and their application in science outreach activities related to influenza. It is a descriptive, qualitative study, based on an experience conducted between March 2023 and August 2024 through extension activities. Three-dimensional didactic models of influenza were produced, representing the virus and its infection pathways, guided by an activity plan and a methodological script until the execution of the actions. These materials were exhibited on five different occasions to diverse audiences, fostering the development of practical skills and strengthening teacher education. The use of tactile resources proved effective in facilitating the understanding of concepts and promoting scientific literacy about influenza. The experience underscores the role of university extension in academic and civic formation, by integrating theory and practice, fostering health education, and strengthening the connection between university and society through accessible and participatory science education.
