Weeds are a major limiting factor for agricultural productivity worldwide, competing with crops for essential resources such as water, light, nutrients, and space. Their high adaptability and resilience to adverse conditions make their management a constant challenge, particularly in sustainable production systems. This study aimed to analyze the impact of weeds on agricultural productivity and to synthesize the main management and control strategies described in the scientific literature. A systematic literature review was conducted using a methodology adapted from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Searches were performed in the Google Scholar and SciELO databases, identifying 39 studies, seven of which were selected after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. The analyzed studies covered various crops—such as soybean, common bean, maize, coffee, tomato, and cotton—and highlighted chemical, mechanical, cultural, and integrated management strategies. The results indicate that weed interference significantly compromises crop productivity and that adopting integrated management practices is crucial for reducing losses and delaying the development of herbicide resistance. The review underscores the importance of sustainable and diversified management as a foundation for maintaining agricultural productivity and food security.
