ABSTRACT: The essential oil of Cyperus rotundus L. has been reported in several studies as it has medicinal properties of great pharmacological interest. In this sense, the present work aimed to carry out a bibliographic review to compile information about the biological activities and the main chemical compounds of the EO of this species. Thus, a search was performed for articles in the databases of Google Scholar, PubMed, SciELO and ScienceDirect. As inclusion criteria, published articles were selected without considering the date of publication. Regarding the exclusion criteria, conference proceedings, e-book, course conclusion work, dissertations and theses were discarded. According to the scientific documents analyzed, it was possible to identify 16 chemical compounds that occur in the essential oil of C. rotundus extracted mainly in Asian countries. The main compounds identified were: α-cyperone, cyperene, caryophyllene oxide and α-selinene. The antimicrobial, cytotoxic and antioxidant activities of essential oil of rhizomes and tubers of C. rotundus have been extensively investigated. These findings are important to guide future studies that aim to analyze the chemical composition and biological activities of the essential oil of this species.
