Artificial Intelligence and Research: Attitudes Acroos Educational Disciplines and Levels In The Philippines

The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into society requires understanding its acceptance, especially within academic settings that shape future innovators. This mixed-methods study, applying the Theory of Planned Behavior, examined whether AI acceptance among undergraduate and graduate students in the Philippines could be predicted by their attitudes toward research and individual factors. Data, collected across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao using the General Attitudes Towards Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS) and the Attitude Towards Research (ATR) scale, revealed that students held a neutral-to-positive attitude towards research and a mixed positive-to-negative attitude towards AI. Crucially, the analysis found no significant relationship between individual correlates and attitude towards AI, nor between attitude towards research and AI. Qualitative themes highlighted 'The Know and the How,' 'The Digital DISconnect,' and 'The Copy-and-Paste Dependence World,' leading to the conclusion that demographic characteristics are not primary drivers of AI attitudes in this context, and recommending the development of responsible AI-enhanced research activities.
