Abstract

This study described the life of selected prominent Mandauehanon, in order to generate a culture-based framework in teaching Local History. It answered the following objectives: (1) identify the life story, advocacy, legacies, challenges and coping mechanism, leadership styles, symbolic metaphors, and their insights of the public about the selected political leader; (2) generate an enhanced culture-based framework can be generated based on the findings of the study; and (3) propose enrichment material that can be used in teaching Local History. This study used historical and portraiture designs, interviews with the key informants (KIs), and were supported with secondary data. KIs were interviewed with the use of a researcher-made interview guide during their preferred schedule. Data and methodological triangulations were used to validate the information. Using cultural revalidation, copies of the results were also reproduced and given to key informants of the selected Mandauehanon political leader. Based on the findings, Mandaue produced an exemplary political leader who offered genuine public service for the people despite meeting the challenges from pre-World War II to pre-Marcos era in the annals of Philippine history. His attributes and legacies inspire the modern-day Mandauehanons of their remarkable political administration. The symbolic metaphor reflected the leader's trademark of a dedicated and selfless public service. His attributes, life story, and contributions served as bases in the enhanced culture-based curriculum framework that became the center-piece in the construction of localized and contextualized instructional modules in the teaching of Local history.
