ABSTRACT: The neonatal period is marked by the need for adequate care in view of the organic vulnerabilities of the newborn. Thus, infections are a public health issue identified as the main cause of death in the neonatal period, with emphasis on those of bacterial origin. Thus, the objective of this study was to gather evidence on aspects of the colonization and infection process in the neonatal period. This is a critical review of the literature carried out in databases indexed in open-access virtual libraries and in the gray literature (2009-2019). Searches took place in the databases indexed in the SciELO electronic library, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Google Scholar electronic search engine through the descriptors: “premature newborn”, “neonate”, “colonization”, “infection” and “Neonatal Intensive Care Unit”. The evidence recovered was grouped into 4 categories, entitled as: a) the neonatal period as a risk factor; b) colonization of the newborn; c) infection in the newborn; and d) Staphylococcus aureus species. These categories summarize the evidence produced on the subject in recent years. Thus, the knowledge generated in this study brings together a synthesis about aspects of the colonization and infection process in the neonatal period, emphasizing the importance of new research.
