Structural Validity of Incremental and Entity Beliefs Among Filipino Junior High School Students

Abstract

The present study validated the implicit theory of intelligence (ITI) scale generated by Abd-El-Fattah and Yates (2006). The respondents were the 1 300 grade 7 to 10 high school students under the Division of Malaybalay City for the school year 2022-2023. The exploratory factor analysis extracted seven items of the original 14-item ITI scale, forming a new factor structure. The confirmatory factor analysis revealed an excellent fit for the 7-item scale. Hence, the 7-item ITI scale demonstrates sufficient structural and construct validity. Furthermore, the seven items provided evidence of criterion validity. Therefore, the 7-item ITI scale is a valid tool that can measure high school Filipino student’s mindset theory. Nevertheless, scholars in the field are encouraged to replicate the analysis to supplement and verify the current findings using a different sample of Filipino students. Additional evidence for the scale's reliability and criterion validity is another scope for other researchers to investigate.
